The Province of Lucca, located in the Tuscany region of northwestern Italy, boarders the Ligurian Sea and hosts a sprawling, mountainous landscape and multiple medieval towns. With a population of 387,876, it is a mostly rural province, consisting of 33 communes.

Focus area and Challenges

Key challenges in the Province of Lucca revolve around climate-driven changes in agriculture and land use planning, energy and water consumption reduction, air quality improvement measures, and the complex interplay between climate change, natural risks, and local development.

Objectives

Through the project, Lucca hopes to understand the relationship between different types of land use and climate change, specifically regarding crop type and geographic influencers. A further objective is to assess different governance models to enhance land use planning practice and formulate a model to guide decision-making processes.
